In Costa Rica the insurance market belongs to the government under a monopoly status, through the Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS). Costa Ricans and all the car rental companies do not have others insurance companies. As any other insurance company in the world the "INS" does not offer a full coverage protection program for rented vehicles in Costa Rica.
Mandatory Basic Insurance - (Collission Damage Waiver CDW)
included in our rates. Covers damages of the vehicle in case of accident and the customer is responsible for the 20% deductible.
Insurance does not cover you in case of any negligence if driving through sand, water, under the influence of alcohol or any drugs, and for violations of any condition of the rental agreement.
Supplementary "Zero Deductible" Insurance
The Supplemental Insurance with zero deductible has an additional cost of US

This only applies to reservations made with a minimum rental period of five (5) days or longer and a minimum age of 25.
Restrictions on Supplemental Insurance with Zero Deductible
- Loss of keys, tools, detachable radio front panel.
- Accidents or damages caused to the car due to careless driving, traffic infractions, driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, along areas inaccessible to cars (rivers, beaches, swamps, or similar places); the car being driven by someone who is not authorized under the Rental.
- Contract terms; it does not cover assistance or travel expenses in case of damaged tires, lost keys, discharged batteries for leaving the lights on, car change in case of accident, towing or rescue expenses.
- Leaving the car in unsafe conditions, in lonely places that facilitate car THEFT.
- ZERO DEDUCTIBLE does not cover 20% of damages caused to other people's property in case the customer has an at-fault accident.
Third Party Liability Insurance - (TPL)
covers damages to third party property with a deductible of 20% of the damages. This EXEMPTS the renter or additional driver authorized in the rental contract, having a collision and causing damages to other people's property, FROM ALL CIVIL LIABILITY.
Injuries to 3rd parties are covered up to ¢1.000.000.00 (one million colones) per person. In case of death, coverage is for up to ¢40.000.000.00 (forty million colones) per person with a max of ¢100.000.000 (one hundred million colones) per group of persons.

Supplementary liability protection - (SLP)
This insurance is mandatory and has a cost of $6.00 daily and will respond to third party accident claims that result from bodily injury, including death.
Personal Accident Insurance - (PAI)
Best Price Rent a Cars offers you this optional personal insurance that covers medical expenses when driving the authorized car, and suffering damages due to a traffic accident while inside the car, for a $3 daily fee, covering an amount of ¢3.000.000 (or US $ equivalent at current rate) in medical expenses, in the medical facilities of the Instituto Nacional de Seguros, or in the facilities assigned by this institution. In case of death due to a road traffic accident, the coverage pays up to ¢1.000.000 (or US $ equivalent at current rate).
Credit Card Insurance - Recommended
Using an insurance program provided by some types of gold or platinum credit cards is a good advantage since these credit cards would cover small scratches, small dents as well as the entire rented vehicle in case of collision or theft.
